The Story of Loafer’s Glory Lodge

Nestled along Bear Creek in the rolling hills of Liberty Hill, Texas, Loafer’s Glory Lodge is more than a vacation destination—it’s a place woven into the history of Texas itself.

 

Our family has roots on this land that reach back to the earliest days of the Republic of Texas. As a Daughter of the Republic of Texas, I am proud to share that my ancestors settled in this region under a Mexican land grant long before Texas became a state. Five members of our family served among the original Texas Rangers, helping protect the small frontier communities that once dotted the same creek bottoms and oak groves our guests enjoy today.

 

The landscape surrounding the lodge remains much as it has for generations. Ancient live oaks stretch their branches across the hillsides. Shin oaks, pecan trees, prickly pear cactus, native bluestem grasses, and seasonal wildflowers blanket the ranch throughout the year. Bear Creek winds quietly through the property, creating a haven for wildlife and a peaceful retreat from the noise of everyday life.

 

Nature is never far away here.

 

Guests often spot whitetail deer grazing at sunrise, foxes slipping through the trees at dusk, roadrunners darting across ranch roads, and colorful songbirds filling the air with sound. Bluebirds, cardinals, blue jays, painted buntings, scissor-tailed flycatchers, hawks, caracaras, and even the occasional bald eagle call this area home.

 

A flock of feral peafowl has lived along the creek for years, adding a touch of unexpected color and character to the ranch. Armadillos, rabbits, lizards, raccoons, opossums, and countless other native creatures share the landscape as well.

 

Like any healthy Texas ecosystem, predators are present too. Coyotes, bobcats, and occasionally mountain lions move through the property, though they are rarely seen by people. Guests should also remain aware of native reptiles, including rat snakes, racers, and the occasional rattlesnake or water moccasin. Encounters are uncommon, and these animals generally avoid people, but awareness and respect for wildlife are part of enjoying the natural beauty of the ranch.

 

For our family, this property has always been a place where memories are made.

 

We raised our children here. We celebrated birthdays, holidays, and family reunions beneath these trees. We hosted a wedding, annual Día de los Muertos gatherings, rehearsal dinners, barbecues, and countless weekends with family and friends. Over the years, those experiences helped shape what Loafer’s Glory Lodge has become today.

 

When guests stay with us, they’re not simply renting a lodge. They’re becoming part of a story that spans generations—a story of family, Texas heritage, hospitality, and the enduring connection between people and the land.
